CHAPTER 10

Ryder joined us to stare as I continued to scrub away the filth that had consumed the details of Zach’s life etched into stone. The fact that he had a below ground burial went some way to indicate how long ago it was that he had died, the fact that his birth year started with ‘18’ was also pretty informative.

“He was born in the eighteen hundreds?” Greta said, shock causing her to almost shout. “Is this a joke? I’m dating a man that was alive two hundred years ago? Is that even legal?!”

“I think that ghost relationships aren’t really bound by conventional—” Ryder began. I shot him a look and he opted to close his mouth.

“Have you never talked about stuff like that?” I asked. “I know you said you don’t try to bring up the ‘how you died’ stuff, but… I mean…”

“People don’t always want to talk about the living part of their existence. As an example, I was murdered; not super excited to open a conversation with that. Hardly a great ice-breaker, is it?”

“I know, but you were the peacekeeper so you’re life was known a little,” Ryder continued. “It surprises me that you never—”

“Is he for real?” Greta snapped. “I feel like you are trying to imply that I left myself wide open for this by not pushing harder for information, like I should have pointed a light in his eyes and demanded he answer a pop-quiz before we started spending time together.”

“I didn’t mean that!” Ryder said, defensively. “It just seems like something that would have come up naturally in conversation, that’s all. Like, ‘what’s your name? What’s your star sign? Who was president when you were alive?’”

“You’re a vampire, Ryder. You’re immortal. At some point you might find yourself lying about your age so as not to freak people out,” Greta exclaimed.

“I feel like I’m getting a lot of heat for this, and I had nothing to do with it,” Ryder said, holding up his hands as if surrendering.

“He didn’t want to answer questions about his life, he said it made him feel uneasy to talk about that because it wasn’t who he was anymore. He sort of convinced me that it made sense to leave that in the past, to move on from it completely. I now see that’s because he’s been dead longer than he was ever alive! He’s had hundreds of years to process being a ghost and I have only been at this for a year!”

“Did you ever explicitly ask him his age? Or date of birth?” I asked.

“I…” she paused to think. “I think I did and he told me he was a ‘child of the nineties’, which I suppose wasn’t technically a lie.”

“Ahh, child of the eighteen nineties,” Ryder said.

“Yeah, we all got it, thanks. Didn’t need you to spell it out,” I said, rolling my eyes.

“You know what, I’m going to go back to wrestling with the brambles over there because I’m the scape goat here,” he huffed, marching back off to the trees.
